SS Rajamouli, Shabana Azmi Invited to Academy! 8 Indians Join Oscars Prestigious Club (2024)

Acclaimed director SS Rajamouli and veteran actress Shabana Azmi are among a distinguished group of Indian filmmakers and artists invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars.

This diverse new class reflects the Academy’s commitment to inclusion, with 44% women, 41% from underrepresented ethnicities, and representation from 56 countries. India boasts eight members, including costume designer Rama Rajamouli (SS Rajamouli’s wife) and ‘Gully Boy’ co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani.

Academy Welcomes Renowned Indian Figures

Beyond Rajamouli and Azmi, the invitees include cinematographer Ravi Varman and choreographer Prem Rakshith (known for “Naatu Naatu”). This recognition highlights India’s growing influence in global cinema.

International Recognition for Diverse Achievements

The Academy also invited 2024 Oscar winners like actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph and filmmakers Mstyslav Chernov and the sound duo behind “War Is Over! The Zone of Interest.” Additionally, the VFX team from “Godzilla Minus One” received recognition.

Academy Membership Strengthens with New Talent

Academy leadership expressed their excitement about the new class, emphasizing their significant contributions to filmmaking. With all acceptances, the Academy’s membership will surpass 10,900, with over 9,000 voting members.

This prestigious invitation signifies a growing international presence within the Academy, recognizing exceptional talent across various filmmaking disciplines.
