The much-anticipated trailer for Shankar’s “Indian 2” starring Kamal Haasan has dropped, but some fans are left scratching their heads. While the concept sparks debate on being old-fashioned, the biggest question mark lies with Kamal Haasan’s character, Senapathy.
Given Senapathy’s birth year (1918) established in the first film, viewers are surprised to see him performing high-octane stunts and battling villains in the trailer. Social media is abuzz with questions about the believability of a 106-year-old executing such feats.
Addressing these concerns at the Mumbai trailer launch, director Shankar offered a unique explanation. He referenced a real-life martial arts master, Luci Geon, who continues to perform impressive feats well into his 120s. Shankar suggests Senapathy’s exceptional physical condition stems from mastery of the ancient martial art Varma Kalai, coupled with a disciplined lifestyle of yoga, meditation, and a restricted diet.
While Shankar’s explanation has some logic, it remains to be seen if the audience will fully accept the portrayal of Senapathy’s action hero persona. With the Tamil film industry facing challenges this year, the success of “Indian 2” hinges on its ability to overcome this hurdle, along with any concerns about the film’s concept. Indian 2 hits theaters on July 12th, 2024.
